A conference on ‘Women in Islam’ will be held in New York on March 8 under the leadership of Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. On the sidelines of the UN Commission on the Status of Women’s 67th session, Pakistan is hosting the conference as chair of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers.
In this conference, we aim to bridge the gap between perception and reality about women’s rights in Islam and celebrate the experiences and successes of iconic Muslim women.
To address challenges and explore opportunities to advance the role of women in OIC countries, the initiative aims to create an annual policy dialogue. Following the opening address of the Foreign Minister, other dignitaries, and representatives of OIC Member States will speak, including UN General Assembly President Csaba Korosi, OIC Secretary General Hissein Braham Taha, and UN-Women Executive Director Sima Bahous.
In addition, the Foreign Minister will participate in a high-level UN Security Council debate on ‘Women, Peace and Security’ sponsored by Mozambique in its capacity as this month’s Council President.
