Avatar: The Way of Water generated an estimated $82.4 million in North America, pushing it past the $1 billion mark in record time, according to our correspondent last Sunday.
A half-dozen films have reached the $1 billion mark in their first two weeks; the sci-fi flick earned $440.5 million domestically, on top of $957 million overseas.
The original Avatar made a record $2.9 billion. James Cameron, the director, estimates that the high-budget 20th Century movie needs twice that to break even.
The second-place film in North American theaters went to Universal’s computer-animated Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which took in $22 million for the weekend.
During its eighth week on the market, Disney’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever earned $6.5 million to place third; its domestic total rose to $439.6 million.
The Sony biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody, starring Naomi Ackie, placed fourth with $5.4 million.
At $3.6 million, Paramount’s comedy-drama Babylon came in fifth. Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie star in director Damien Chazelle’s over-the-top tribute to an early Hollywood struggling to transition from silent to talkies.
Violent Night ($2.8 million), The Whale ($1.8 million), The Fabelmans ($1.6 million), The Menu ($1.4 million) and Strange World ($747,000) also made the top 10.
