(IRAN) In response to her solidarity with anti-government demonstrators, Iranian authorities have arrested one of the country’s best-known actresses.
State media reported that “Taraneh Alidoosti” was detained on charges of “spreading falsehoods” about the protest movement.
She condemned the execution of a protester in an Instagram post last week.
Alidoosti is best known for her role in the Oscar-winning film The Salesman.
The 38-year-old took aim at some international organizations for not speaking out against Mohsen Shekari’s execution.
According to the authorities, he was hanged for blocking the main road in Tehran in September and wounding a paramilitary force member with a machete.
Mohsen Shekari was his name. It is a disgrace to humanity that international organizations are watching this bloodshed and not taking action,” she wrote.
She was arrested by police for failing to provide “any documents consistent with her claims”, according to a post on IRNA’s Telegram account.
She recently deleted her Instagram account, which has more than eight million followers.
She won an Academy Award in 2016 for Best International Feature Film for her role in The Salesman, one of Iran’s most successful films.
Following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody in September, she became a vocal critic of the Iranian government’s efforts to suppress the protest movement.
As a symbol of solidarity with the demonstrations, she posted an image on Instagram without a headscarf in November.
In the aftermath of the 1979 revolution, the protest movement has become one of the most severe challenges to the Iranian regime.
According to Iranian law, ‘moharebeh’ is defined as “creating public insecurity” by using a weapon to threaten lives or property. Two men have already been executed for the crime.
