Pakistan Receives Two Nuclear Reactors From China

Pakistan has received two Hualong-1 nuclear power units from China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).

China’s third-generation nuclear power technology has been used to develop these units.

In Pakistan, CNNC has built two out of six nuclear power stations.

Pakistan’s first million-kilowatt-grade single-unit nuclear power plant, Karachi K-2/K-3, is the country’s largest nuclear power plant.

KANUPP has developed two Hualong-1 reactors; K-2 and K-3. Construction of K-2 and K-3 reactors began in 2015 and 2016 respectively. The two reactors became operational in 2021 and 2022.

Combined, the K-2 and K-3 units have produced nearly 20 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, contributing greatly to Pakistan’s economic and social development.

Over the course of its lifespan, the project has also created over 60,000 jobs for local residents.

Hualong-1: A Brief Overview

In the years ahead, Hualong-1 will become the mainstream nuclear technology due to its indigenous pressurized water design. In the current nuclear power market, Hualong-1 technology has the highest acceptability and is also known as HPR1000.

In terms of technology and cost, the Hualong-1 reactor is superior to both the US-made AP1000 and the European-made Evolutionary Pressurized Reactor.
