Rishi Sunak was fined for not wearing a seatbelt in a moving vehicle while filming a social media video, Lancashire Police said in a tweet.
A spokesperson for Sunak said that the PM removed his seatbelt to film a small clip. He fully accepts his mistake and apologizes.
The prime minister was in Lancashire when the video was filmed, during a trip across the north of England.
The video – to promote the government’s latest round of “leveling up” spending – was posted on Mr. Sunak’s Instagram account.
It is the Prime Minister’s belief that everyone should wear a seatbelt, the spokesperson said.
As per the UK’s driving laws, any passenger caught without a seatbelt in a moving car will be fined 100 pounds on the spot, increasing to 500 pounds if the case goes to court unless a valid medical exemption covers them.
A 42-year-old man from London has been issued a conditional offer of a fixed penalty following the circulation of a video on social media showing a passenger not wearing a seat belt while in a moving car in Lancashire.
