Twenty People Have Been Killed In A Tajik Avalanche

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan: 10 more people have been killed in eastern Tajikistan by avalanches, the Central Asian nation’s government said on Thursday, bringing the death toll over the past two days to 20.

Avalanches hit the Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous region, which borders China and Afghanistan, where more than 400 households have been relocated.

All international traffic has been suspended due to avalanches that have hit homes and roads.

Khorog’s mayor, Rizo Nazarzoda, urged the city’s 30,000 residents to stay indoors as heavy snow and rain fell.

There were videos from the area showing one-story buildings covered with snow and ice blocks, and rescue teams digging through the snow for bodies.
